Last week, my Mom had pacemaker surgery. I flew back home in order to hang out with her for a couple of days, although I don’t think she really needed me all that much. Mostly we ran errands and I helped with laundry and retrieved items that were too high for her to reach and made sure she ate something other than frozen yogurt. Did you know that when you get past a certain age, it’s OK to just eat desserts for every meal?
By the time the week was up, I was missing my husband, tired from sleeping on an air mattress, and feeling ridiculously and inexplicably emotional. Even though my parents are in good health, I don’t like seeing them get older. Why can’t we just suspend everyone we love in time, so that we can have them near us always?
The good news is that my parents are stubborn, so I suspect they will continue to show me who’s boss and live to be a hundred. And that’s OK with me.
