John's Serious Birthday Face | April 2009 | Copyright 2009

My friend John and I met at my current place of employment. He walked in. We were introduced. I announced that I had a dream about him the previous night. John was not taken aback by that statement. John isn’t taken aback by much.
From that day forward, John would arrive at the office at 7 a.m. and immediately plant himself outside my cubicle for a chat. Not being a morning person, I was mildly taken aback by this behavior. John was not. My being a crab in the morning had no affect on him whatsoever.
Time moved on. Occasionally, John would suggest a rousing race around the floor in our office chairs. Or a game of frisbee over the cubicle walls. Sometimes he’d walk backwards around the block on our lunch breaks. You know, just because.
Between office shenanigans, John took the time to overload my brain with code and server knowledge. He became an unexpected mentor. John had far, far more faith in my abilities then I had in my own.
And so my happy-go-lucky friend grew on me. I grew accustomed to his morning chats. After awhile, I stopped grunting at him when he would instigate office hijinx, and soon became a willing participant and co-conspirator. When John stepped into my life, I stopped taking myself so seriously. It is no understatement to say that John Brewer has changed me for the better.
I sometimes say that I became friends with John reluctantly, which is amusing, as I now consider him one of my best friends in the world.
So here’s to you, my goofy pal. Happy 40th birthday! And [insert complicated physics calculation here] happy returns.
